The Experimental High School of the University of Patras belongs to a special category of Greek schools, Experimental Schools, and operates under the auspices of the University of Patras. Its faculty includes highly educated and experienced teachers, and students’ academic level is high. The school community is very experienced in modern pedagogical approaches, interdisciplinary work, experience-based learning, clubs, multilateral programmes and innovative actions in various areas such as environmental education, cultural and theatrical education, health education, local history, volunteering, etc.
The school community is developing living lab activities as a way of adding a new dimension to school development, involving teachers and classes from various curriculum areas in interdisciplinary teamwork. The overall aim of these activities is to promote healthy eating in the school community. Relevant actions include promoting fruit and vegetable-based dishes in the school canteen, as well as organizing an event in the school, in which cooks from the local vocational school will be invited to cook healthy meals for the students.
The school has very good contacts and previous collaborations with various stakeholders from the local areas as well as more widely from Greece and abroad, thanks to the European projects in which it has participated. In addition, it can build on its contacts with alumni of the school, as many notable members of society have graduated from it.
During the SALL pilot in school year 2020-2021, the COVID-19 pandemic did not allow the school living lab project to adequately involve societal actors. However, the planning of the project that took place in this initial stage, foresees collaboration with students’ parents and families as well as with the local vocational school of cooking. In addition, despite the difficulties in the implementation of the project, early activities have led to considerable awareness raising among students in relation to healthy eating, and the school community managed to promote the selling of fruit and some vegetable-based meals in the school canteen.
The school is planning to continue the living lab project on healthy eating with the aim to complete the planned activities. This will include the organization of the event with the cooks from the local vocational school, through which it is planned to gain some very tasty but healthy recipes that will we adopted by the school canteen.
